Carrot glanced at the position of the flaming sun high in the sky. "I don't really think that's going to be a problem, unless the castle's twenty miles away."
The winged girl cast a shaded glance over her shoulder. "It's more like thirty."
"Thirty miles!?! We can't cover thirty miles in half a day!"
"Calm down, Brother," interceeded Marron. "We will merely camp after nightfall."
"No," cried Daughter, "you mustn't!"
"Why not?" Gateau joined in.
"It's complicated to explain, but bad things-very bad things-happen at night. Without the sun, there is nothing to protect us."
"Whaddya mean, 'there's nothing to protect us'?" asked Gateau, sounding traumatized. "What more do you need than this?" He launched into a full muscle flexing demonstration.
"He's right," agreed Carrot. "We won't let anything happen to you."
"No, you don't understand," Daughter said, stopping her march to stare at them. "These things in the dark can't be hurt by muscle or steel or magic. They are there and they are so ancient that nothing in this world can stop them."
"What are they?" this from Carrot.
Daughter just continued to stare for a moment before responding. "It really doesn't matter. If we hurry, we'll be able to avoid them entirely." She pursed her lips. "Now, MOVE!!" she shouted and took flight at a pace that would keep the boys from protesting further.
