Gandalf screams and Theoden jumps up again, yelling, but flies back into his throne when a bright light erupted from Gandalf's staff. Theoden groans in pain and begins to fall forward. Eowyn immediately threw Aragorn's hand off her shoulder and rushes to Theoden's side. In amazement she watch how his face began to change that of a very old man to that of a man in his early fifties. Tears began to form as a smile sprung from her lips. Theoden blinked a few times and looked over at Eowyn and touched her face and took her hand in his."I know your face. Eowyn...Eowyn..." Theoden whispered and smiled he looked over and gaped at who he saw."Gandalf?"

Gandalf smiled and sighed happily that it was over."Breathe the free air again, my friend." Theoden looked down at his lap and began to think."Dark have been my dreams of late." Theoden soon whispered...

So Far Away
Chapter Eighteen

Theoden stood up from his thrown his bones grew feeble from not being mobilized for so long. the king held his stiff hand up to his face and flexed its muscles for the first time in a long while, touching his open palm with his other hand and caressed it."Your fingers would remember their old strength better, if they grasped your sword." Gandalf stated nodding towards Hama to bring his King his weapon. Hama quickly did so, bowing in front of Theoden first and then walked up and kneeled before his lord holding out the unused weapon to his king. Theoden looked at the sword and lifted his arm out to it slowly, the pads of his fingers touched the cold metal of the hilt and soon he grasped the blade and draws out the sword from its sheath. Theoden's gaze soon landed on Grima and the anger began to build in his blue eyes.

Grima was thrown out of the hall by the guards moments after, Grima shouted out in pain as he rolled down the cold stone steps that lead to the palace. Stopping at the second to the last bit of stairs Grima scrambled onto his knees and bowed before Theoden. The towns people looked up from their work gazing in wonder at what was happening."I only ever served you, my lord!" Grima shouted, frightened by what might happen to him."Your witchcraft would have had me crawling on all fours like a beast!" Theoden growled as he walked slowly down the steps as he watched Grima grovel and slowly back down the stairs."Send me not from you side!" Grima begged. Theoden ignores the pale man's request and raised his sword to strike the final blow. He was stopped quickly by Aragorn just as his blade was a few feet away from Grima's head."No, my lord! No, my lord. Let him go. Enough blood has been spilled on his account." Aragorn said low enough only to where the enraged King could here him. Grima quickly got off of his knees and stumbled down the last flight of stairs and into the crowd. Theoden glared at Grima's back as the little man fled."Get out of my way!" Grima cried and pushed through the crowd of people and into the stables. Getting on a black stallion Grima galloped out of the tall gates of Edoras.

Aragorn kneeled in front of Theoden."Hail, Theoden, King!" Aragorn yelled and bowed his head slightly. The towns people bowed in respect for their long absent lord."Where is Theodred? Where is my son?" Theoden soon asked.

Theoden and Gandalf stands in front of Theoden's son's grave."Simbelmyne, ever has it grown on the tombs of my forebears. Now is shall cover the grave of my son. Alas, that these evil days should be mine.... The young perish and the old linger. That I should live to see the last days of my house." Theoden stated twirling the small white flower in his hands."Theodred's death was no of your making." Gandalf comforted."No parent should have to bury their child." Theoden choked and threw the delicate flower onto the tomb. covering his face Theoden began to weep for the death of his son."He was strong in life. His spirit will find its way to the halls of your fathers. Westu hal. Ferou, Theoden, Ferou[1]." Gandalf whispers softly into the wind. Gandalf turned around to see two small children, a boy and a girl, riding towards them. Even from the distance Gandalf could still tell that both of them were famished and tired. The boy fell off of the horse that kept on walking, and the poor girl was just as fatigued.

Ainawen had been looking for Gandalf and Theoden and when she found them still by the grave. She looked at what Gandalf was looking at and seen the children. Ainawen darted off after the horse and stopped it and picked up the boy from the ground. Gandalf walked over and took the girl from the horse and they carried them inside.

Inside the Golden Hall the two children were seated at a table. Both of them were covered with blankets and they were both eating soup. Eowyn and Ainawen at their sides being worried for their well being."They had no warning. They were unarmed. Now the wildmen are moving through the westfold, burning as they go, every rick, cot and tree." Eowyn stated to her Uncle and the guests."Where's mama?" the little girl asked."Hush." Eowyn soothed the young girl and fixed the blanket that was falling from the young one's shoulders. Ainawen often placed the back of her hand on the boy's cheeks and the palm on his forehead checking his temperature as he ate greedily. Legolas noted her motherly actions and smiled softly, which didn't go unnoticed by Aragorn."This is but a taste of the terror that Saruman will unleash. All the more potent for he is driven mad by the fear of Sauron. Ride out and meet him head on. Draw him away from your women and children. You must fight." Gandalf pursued."You have 2,000 good men riding north as we speak. Eomer is loyal to you. His men will return and fight for their king." Aragorn agreed.

"They will be 300 leagues from here by now. Eomer cannot help us. I know what it is you want of me. But I would not bring further death to my people. I will not risk open war." Theoden said softly and stood up from his seat on his throne."Open war is upon you!" Ainawen growled and stood up. Aragorn gave her the look to continue what she was doing and that he would handle it."Ainawen is right, it will happen whether you would risk it or not." Aragorn stated. Theoden began to walk over to Aragorn and stood in front of him."When I last looked, Theoden, not Aragorn, or an elf woman, was King of Rohan." Theoden seethed. Legolas glared at the mortal man. How dare he insult his love.

Ainawen just huffed up her shoulders and went back to checking on the small children. Gimli burped causing the group of people to look at him. He took a long gulp of his ale and then went back to chowing down on his chicken."Then what is the king's decision?" Gandalf asked bringing the attention back to their problem. Theoden looked down and thought diligently.

Hama stood in the center of a crowd of people giving the orders from Theoden."By order of the King, The city must empty. We make for the refuge of Helm's deep. Do not burden yourself with treasures. Take only what provisions you need." Hama ordered over the shouts of the crowd."Helm's Deep! They flee to the mountains when they should stand and fight! Who will defend them if not their king?" Gimli complained. Gandalf, Legolas, Aragorn, and Gimli walked into the stables."He's only doing what he thinks is best for his people. Helm's Deep has saved the min the past." Aragorn defended the confused leader of the city."There is no way out of that ravine. Theoden is walking into a trap. He thinks he is leading them to safety, but what he'll get is a massacre. Theoden has a strong will but I fear for him. I fear for the survival of Rohan. He will need you before the end, Aragorn. The people of Rohan will need you. The defenses have to hold." Gandalf stated angrily.

"They will hold." Aragorn answered. Gandalf sighed and turned to Shadowfax, petting his blonde mane gently."The Grey Pilgrim. That is what they used to call me. 300 lives of men I've walked this earth and now, I have no time." Gandalf began softly."Good luck. My search will not be in vain. Look to my coming, at first light, on the fifth day, at dawn, then look to the East." Gandalf finished and sweeps his leg over the white horse's back and settled down on the saddle."Go." Aragorn pushed on. Gandalf galloped out of the stables and out of the gates and onward north.....
